Apple is preparing a visible redesign for its flagship iPhone display this fall, with new leaks suggesting the Dynamic Island cutout on the iPhone 18 Pro will shrink by approximately 35 percent. According to prominent leaker Ice Universe, the pill-shaped display cutout will measure around 13.5mm wide, down from the 20.7mm width found on current Pro models.
The change marks the first visual alteration to the Dynamic Island since its debut on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. While the reduction may appear modest on paper, the narrower cutout should be immediately noticeable in everyday use, according to 9to5Mac.
Partial Under-Display Face ID Enables the Redesign
The smaller Dynamic Island is made possible by Apple relocating one component of its Face ID system beneath the display. According to multiple sources, including display analyst Ross Young, only the infrared flood illuminator will move under the screen this year. The dot projector, infrared camera, and front-facing camera will remain housed within the centered cutout.
Earlier reports suggesting Apple would place a hole-punch camera in the top-left corner of the display now appear to have been based on mistranslations of Chinese and Korean supply chain leaks, according to Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital. The clarification was supported by another Apple insider, ShrimpApplePro, who shared what is claimed to be a photo of the new Face ID and selfie camera arrangement.

According to Ross Young, the smaller Dynamic Island design will remain through at least 2027, indicating it may take several more years before Apple achieves a truly seamless display.
Additional Rumored Upgrades
Beyond the display changes, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to receive several internal upgrades. Supply chain analyst Jeff Pu has indicated the device will feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, matching the current iPhone 17 Pro models. The devices are also expected to include Apple's A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process.
Reports from MacRumors indicate Apple will adopt LTPO+ display technology for the Pro models, which should improve power efficiency and contribute to longer battery life compared to current LTPO panels.
The smaller Dynamic Island will reportedly remain exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 expected to retain the current design.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.
