 How AWS Downtime Exposed the Internet’s Heavy Cloud Dependence



Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant outage on October 20, 2025, primarily affecting its US-EAST-1 region with substantial disruptions across various apps and services. The outage caused increased error rates and high latencies for about 28 AWS services, particularly affecting the DynamoDB APIs. This resulted in widespread impacts on many popular websites and applications including Snapchat, Reddit, Fortnite, Coinbase, Robinhood, Duolingo, Canva, Roblox, Crunchyroll, Venmo, Alexa, Prime Video, McDonald's app, Uber’s Lyft competitor, and many others. The root issue was related to DNS resolution problems at the DynamoDB API endpoint in the US-EAST-1 region.


Numerous service users reported difficulties accessing features or connecting to their apps due to the reliance on AWS cloud infrastructure. The outage affected diverse platforms from financial services like Coinbase and Robinhood to entertainment and gaming platforms such as Fortnite, Crunchyroll, and Roblox. Messaging services like Signal and social platforms, including Snapchat and Reddit, also experienced service interruptions. Additionally, some banking customers, smart home devices like Ring doorbells, and other everyday digital services encountered disruptions. AWS engineers were actively working on multiple recovery paths to mitigate the downtime and restore full functionality as soon as possible.
